What to look for

Set contents

The piece count and range of sizes decide how many categories you can separate — and how neatly the cubes fit your bag.

Compression

Compression squeezes soft items down, which matters most when every liter of a carry-on counts.

Organization approach

How a set helps you sort and find things shapes how fast packing goes, and how easy it is to live out of the bag.

Best-suited use

Sets built for compressing clothes, sorting many categories, or isolating laundry serve different travelers.

How we chose

We synthesized this

Packing cubes turn a suitcase from a jumbled pile into labelled drawers — clothing in one, tech in another, worn laundry in a third. The right set depends on whether you mostly want to sort your gear, or squeeze more of it into a tight carry-on.

We weighed each set against four things that shape real packing: how many pieces and sizes it includes, whether it compresses, how it helps you sort and find items, and the traveler it's built for. The Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal wins because its dual-zipper compression flattens soft clothing and claws back space when a carry-on is full.

The alternatives cover other habits. The BAGSMART six-piece set gives more sizes for separating many categories. The Amazon Essentials set keeps things simple, with mesh tops you can see through at a glance. And the Shacke set folds in a separate laundry bag to keep worn clothes away from clean ones.

Every call here is a synthesis of documented specs and established use, not a timed lab test — you can read exactly what that means on our how-we-test page. Pick the set that matches how you pack, and it'll make every trip after it easier.

Frequently asked questions

Do packing cubes actually save space?

Some do more than others. Standard cubes mostly organize rather than shrink your load — they keep categories separated so a bag is easier to pack and live out of. Compression cubes, like our top pick, go further, flattening soft items to reduce their packed volume, which helps most in a tight carry-on.

Compression cubes or regular cubes?

Choose compression if you're maximizing a carry-on and packing soft, squishable clothing. Choose regular cubes if you value speed and simplicity — compression zippers add a step to packing and unpacking. Plenty of travelers mix both.

What size and how many cubes do I need?

It depends on how you sort. A four- or five-piece set covers most trips, with a large cube for clothing and smaller ones for underwear, tech, or toiletries. Larger sets add flexibility if you like a dedicated cube for every category.
