Pros & cons
Pros
- Glare-free front-lit display stays readable in bright sun and in the dark alike
- Goes weeks between charges, so it is rarely the thing you have to plug in
- 16GB holds most reading libraries with room to spare
- Charges over USB-C, and the Without Ads model keeps the lock screen clear
Cons
- No auto-adjusting light or wireless charging — both stay Signature Edition features
- 16GB can fill quickly for very large graphic-novel or Audible libraries
- Built around the Kindle store rather than open ePub shops
Skip it if
Skip it if you want colour E Ink for comics or buy from non-Amazon ebook shops — a Kobo suits open ePub better; and skip it if you want an auto-adjusting light or wireless charging, which the Signature Edition adds.
How we assessed it
We synthesized this
For most readers, the standard Paperwhite is the Kindle to get. The glare-free front-lit display stays readable in bright sun and in a dark bedroom, it goes weeks between charges so it is rarely the thing you have to plug in, and 16GB holds most reading libraries with room to spare. USB-C handles charging, and the Without Ads model keeps the lock screen clear.
The trade-off is the step-up features it leaves out: there is no auto-adjusting light and no wireless charging, which both belong to the Signature Edition. Very large graphic-novel or Audible libraries can also fill 16GB, and like every Kindle it is built around the Kindle store rather than open ePub shops. If you want colour or open ePub, a Kobo fits better. Our read reflects Amazon's documented specifications rather than a hands-on test — see how we test.
